You don’t always have to buy pure tea tree oil – hair care manufacturers know how good this oil is and that’s why they often add it to shampoos. Which means that for as little as few bucks you can purchase a bottle of shampoo that already possesses all the anti-dandruff properties of tea tree oil.
All right, I may have gone a bit overboard here – not every shampoo that contains this oil is a magical anti-dandruff remedy, however, in general, the reviews are highly positive. The overwhelming majority of people who have tried a tea tree oil dandruff shampoo on their hair are very satisfied with the results. That has to count for something, right?
How to Use Pure Tea Tree Oil for Fighting Dandruff
If you want to be in full control of your tea tree oil dandruff treatment procedure then just head over to the nearest drugstore and get yourself some pure tea tree oil. There are many ways you can use it but the most popular one would probably be to instil it into a bottle of shampoo. The approximate proportion is one drop of tea tree oil per 3 mL of shampoo (which is around 10 drops per ounce).
Tips for better results:
- Pick a shampoo that is gentle and doesn’t have a strong odor.
- Don’t rinse immediately after applying the mixture to your hair because the oil needs some time (at least a few minutes) to soak in.
Some people prefer applying the oil directly to hair right before shampooing but, even though it could work, it’s dangerous. Tea tree oil is very strong and most hair care specialists suggest to always dilute it beforehand. If you have decided not to listen to them then at least start with a tiny amount just to see how your scalp and hair reacts.

Dandruff sure is a difficult thing to live with and that’s why most people will try everything they can to get rid of it. Even though there haven’t been a lot studies that would prove the anti-dandruff properties of tea tree oil, it seems like there is something to it.
I would say that it’s definitely at least worth to give it a try. While there is a chance you might end up disappointed there’s as much of a chance that tea tree oil will become the best dandruff cure you’ve ever known.

60,000 – 40,000 years… (making theirs one of the oldest remaining
cultures on the planet).
I have just started to use TTO and am having even more dandruff. It seems that my entire scalp is more dry than it has been before.
Is there a timeframe where the shampoo eradicates all dead skin cells causing more dandruff for a period of time? Looking for feedback.
Tea tree oil by itself is extremely drying if not used with a carrier. Are you using pure TTO alone or in a shampoo/carrier? I would recommend diluting it. But i also have the same reaction when i try to agressively remove dandruff. It always come back much worse.

Tea tree oil is really effective, you can even try you-gut, it is really nice in getting rid of dryness in body and hence the permanent removal of dandruff
I’m using Australian Bodycare Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (recommended by the pharmacist) and the first two weeks it was super effective but now about 4 weeks in, my dandruff is back in full force.
I’m going to keep on using it to see if anything changes. At the moment I’m not convinced.
